Susan Bates - Designing the “Coastline” Patterns for StitchableCards
A coastline theme centers around imagery, colors, and feelings inspired by the
meeting of the land and the sea. Coastal imagery for me is also associated with happy family holidays that centred around trips to the beach. With this in mind, I’ve tried to evoke a relaxed, warm, and sunny atmosphere in this set of designs.
The colors of the coast are often the blues of the sea and sky, the sandy tones of the beach, and then some bright accents of coral, red and yellow; for sunsets, wild flowers and rooftops.

The first design in this set shows a detailed scene of a coastal landscape, as befitting the coastline theme. A tall white lighthouse and its adjoining little house, both with red roofs, sit on a rocky island covered with bright green grass. Colorful red flowers sit in the fore-ground adding an extra pop of color here. The sky has soft fluffy clouds and a yellow sun shines in the turquoise blue sky. A lighthouse is a comforting scene to sailors, as it guides them to safety around the rocky coastline. They’re built to endure harsh weather and symbolize stability from chaos and protection from harm.

For the square shaped template I’ve created a serene scene of a boat sailing on a calm blue sea. In the background the sun is setting, with the sky changing from turquoise blues to yellows and oranges. Sailing can create a connection with nature and a sense of freedom, so it’s easy to see what people love about it.

For the circular design I’ve used a limited color palette of yellows, teal blues and soft purples. Here we see the sea lapping at the coast, creating pretty curving shapes in the water. The mauve colors look lovely against the yellow beach and the yellow tones in the sky. Tying it all together are the soft aqua colors in the middle distance of the water and the cliffs.

The heart shaped template contains a fun image of a pair of colourful pink and yellow flip-flops. The way I’ve arranged them fits perfectly into this heart shape. A softly coloured striped teal blue background adds a nautical touch to the design and suggests that the flip-flops are resting on a towel that you’d take to the beach with you on a hot summer’s day.
This set of designs were fun to put together. We have the lovely soft blue shades
of the sea and the sky which contrast beautifully with the yellows, oranges and
purples of the designs. The designs include a variety of scenes and imagery and I
hope you love my designs and have lots of fun stitching them!
