Susan Bates - Designing the “Sweet Tooth” Patterns for StitchableCards

This month’s pattern release celebrates all things sweet; candyfloss, ice creams, cakes and a slightly healthier strawberry are all included in this set of designs. For the colour palette I’ve chose a range of fairly soft pastel colours, with a pop of red to liven things up.
My first design is based on a vintage style cotton candy cart. I remember going to fêtes and fairgrounds when I was young and seeing the cotton candy, (or candyfloss, as we call it in the UK), being made. It amazed me that you could watch the sugar concoction turn into what looked like balls of cotton wool that you could eat! My candy cart is shown in subtle pastel shades and features the cute phrase “hello sweetie”. There’s cotton candy on sticks, ready to eat; underneath the colorful striped awning.
For my second design in this set I’ve depicted an ice cream – the kind where there’s lots of scoops all piled up on top of each other in a cone. It’s topped off with a cherry and a wafer biscuit. Some sprinkles add little dots colour to the pattern and the overall effect is soft and pretty.
For this ‘stitchables’ template I thought it would be fun to create a donut design, as the circular nature of a donut fits it perfectly, filling the whole shape edge-to-edge. The donut is covered in pink and white icing and sprinkles. You should find it easy to stitch as it has a simple color palette and just a small amount of backstitching
Strawberries are said to symbolise love and passion, so it seemed fitting to depict mine inside the heart-shaped template. I’ve made the strawberry the main focus here; it’s almost as though we’ve zoomed in close-up on it. I love the combination of red and pink in the design! This one is also easy to stitch - it only has backstitching around the leaves at the top of the fruit and is a simple, bold motif.
